Narrabri Shire Council will host several free barbecue lunches throughout the Shire during Local Government Week, August 3-9.

“The barbecues are to provide the community opportunities to come and chat to staff and Councillors in an informal, COVID safe environment,” council said.

“Local Government Week is an opportunity to highlight the integral role Council plays in the community.”

Mayor Cathy Redding said in the past 12 months Narrabri Shire faced unprecedented challenges, from drought to bushfires to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Council recognised the important responsibility it had to support our community through these crises,” Cr Redding said.

“We worked to help create alternative employment opportunities to get us through COVID-19, provided support to firefighting agencies in bushfire affected areas, and worked hard to drive economic recovery in response to the pandemic through numerous business and community driven incentives and assistance packages.

“Local Government Week is about making residents aware of the range of services Council has on offer to make our community a fantastic place to work and live.”

Mayor Redding said the theme of this year’s Local Government week was ‘Councils Do’.

“Council recognises the truth of that theme – that we would provide the best possible support for our community through the broad range of services we provide and a proactive response to the many challenges our community faces,” she said.

“Council is the hub of the community, responsible for a range of areas including community events, community facilities, libraries, sports fields, parks, pools, building and development assessment, roads, compliance, water, waste and cemeteries.

“We are often the first point of contact for any issues arising at a local level, and we are the first line of defence when it comes to providing and protecting basic amenities and the lifestyle for our area, while balancing the need to attract new business and development opportunities.”

Everyone is invited to join council members for a free barbecue at any of the events – in Narrabri at the back of the Narrabri Region Visitor Information Centre, Monday August 3, at 12 noon, Gwabegar on Tuesday August 4, 12.30pm at Anzac Park, Boggabri, Wednesday August 5, 12 noon, at Middle Park, Wee Waa on Thursday August 6, 12 noon at Wee Waa Green Space, in Rose Street, and Pilliga on Friday, August 7, at 12.30pm, Pilliga Community Centre.
