Maitland Street, between Killarney Street and Bowen Street, will become a 40kmh zone after Narrabri Shire Council supported reducing the speed limit in the area at the December ordinary meeting.

During the public exhibition period, 183 community members provided feedback with 81 per cent of respondents supporting the proposed change.

Feedback from the survey indicated support for additional improvements to Maitland Street, including additional lighting, more shade, the inclusion of multiple pedestrian crossings, additional seating, accessibility for wheelchairs and prams as well as a focus on having vacant sites cleaned up.

Following the meeting, council said this reduced speed limit will create a safer road environment for all road users, in particular pedestrians, cyclists and children.

Road users can expect to see the new speed limit implemented by March 2025. Council will provide more updates to ensure all road users are aware of when the changes are implemented.
