On Thursday, June 6, Narrabri High School students from Year 9 and 10 excelled at the North West Science and Engineering Challenge, being announced overall winners for the second year in a row.

Showcasing their skills in various STEM activities, our students competed against other high schools from the district including St Mary’s Gunnedah, Coonabarabran High School, St Philomena’s Moree, and Moree Secondary Collage to claim victory.

The NHS team constructed the best bridge of the day, holding 1.9kg, designed a wind turbine that spun at 140RPM, crafted a balsa-wood glider that flew a record 15.6m, and built an earthquake-proof tower holding six weights.

Their teamwork and determination led them to victory, winning the local competition for the second year in a row against the four other schools. It was a fantastic day filled with fun, learning, and remarkable achievements!

Thank you to the University of Newcastle, Rotary Club of Narrabri and sponsors for making this event possible for our students.

Special acknowledgement goes to the following students for their support in volunteering to run the science and engineering challenge for the primary schools earlier this week: Caitlin Evans, Anna Stuart, Alistair Dowdell, Jobe O’Regan, Stella Laws, Jasmine Weekes, Elizabeth Faris and Keira Bennett.

Especially, a special shout-out to Stella Laws and Jasmine Weekes who also gave up their position to participate in the event for this year on the high school day to assist with volunteering again.

The support of all these students allowed for the successful organisation of the event on all three days.
