WELCOME NEWS: The announcement that the Narrabri Health Service pathology department will be retained was welcomed by the community and a group of supporters gathered at the hospital on Monday morning to applaud the decision.

However, the proposed changes and claimed lack of communication around the future of the service led to community anger and disquiet about the process.

“The announcement of retention of our pathology services proves that we can and will stand up to bureaucracy,” mayor Darrell Tiemens said at Monday’s gathering.

“And we can do it again in the future if needed.” Narrabri Chamber of Commerce president Russell Stewart said he believed the decision makers had been ‘shocked’ by the community reaction.

“It was a wake up call.”

Speakers agreed the ‘pathology issue was evidently settled, but there remained further issues in the provision of Narrabri health services to be focused on.
