The Namoi/Gwydir Rural Fire Service are looking forward to the end of another busy fire season with extremely large fires in the Pilliga Forest over December and January, and keeping volunteers busy with numerous fires in area.

The Duck Creek, Pilliga Forest fires were declared a Section 44 state of emergency on December 8, 2023, after lightning strikes the previous night sparked fires south of Narrabri and continued to burn until its peak on December 19.

The declared end of the bushfire danger period on April 1, runs between October to March.

The RFS has already started preparations for the next fire season by conducting training, hazard reduction, equipment checks, and brigade meetings to organise units.

Landowners will no longer require a fire permit to conduct burning on their properties but are still required to notify neighbouring properties 24 hours in advance.

They will also need to notify their local RFS via the RFS website or phone, on 1300 856 352.

Superintendent Michael Brooks urges property-owners to contact the fire control centre if they need a hand with planning controlled burns, and was happy to offer help from RFS volunteers, pending availability.

“Conditions are easing, humidity is increasing and nights are cooling off, which means fuel moisture increasing,” said Supt Brooks.

“Fire activity, while expected to be a lot less, can still be exacerbated by conditions such as increased winds, which can be prevalent during the winter season.”

While RFS prepare themselves for the next season, Supt Brooks also urges community members to check their bushfire survival and safety plans.

“We want the community to be aware that everyone is responsible to do the best they can to contain a fire on their own property, by ensuring breaks and access to water are adequate, and to have a fire prevention plan.

“The RFS is always happy to help with any of that, and always remember to have an alternate plan,” said Supt Brooks.

“Things like having two access routes to your property and ensuring that fuel loads such as grass and bush land close to the home are minimised.”
