About 25 people attended a Lord’s Taverners netball workshop at the Wee Waa Sporting Complex last week.

Lord’s Taverners Narrabri cell captain Kath Hamilton said that the workshop was about teaching people the skills of a coach, manager and umpire.

Teachers, students, parents and community members all took part.

It was run in conjunction with Netball NSW and the department of education.

“This is a new initiative brought to fruition by the Lord’s Taverners and ensures the skills and qualifications gained by community members stay in the community,” said Hamilton.

Hamilton said the aim is to use “the talent and ability” on the ground and train parents and community members how to take on roles such as that of an umpire or coach to ensure that sport games can continue to run and aren’t cancelled in smaller towns
because there is no one to fill these positions.

Hamilton said that training the participants would help children in country towns overcome disadvantages associated with isolation.

She said the new initiative was about benefitting the whole community and not just one child.

Chris Kelleway was the workshop presenter and was impressed with the number of participants who travelled to Wee Waa from Lightning Ridge, Collarenabri, Mullaley, Barraba and Narrabri.

“Our aim is to make more children, more active,” she said.
