Serving the Narrabri Shire

The Courier is a locally owned, independent newspaper serving the Narrabri Shire in North Western NSW, Australia, and has operated from 60 Maitland Street, Narrabri, since the 1870s. In 2013, The Courier celebrated its centenary, marking its long-standing presence in the community.

Before 1913, the township of Narrabri was served by two newspapers: the Narrabri Herald, founded in the 1870s, and the Narrabri Age, launched in 1884. These papers published until 1912, when they merged to form The North Western Courier, which debuted on January 7, 1913, under J.E. Asher’s ownership. Ownership transferred to John Shearer Dunnet in 1920, and the paper remained in his family until 2024, when Mark and Susie Slack-Smith acquired it. This new chapter builds on The Courier’s legacy, ensuring its continued role as a trusted source of local news and community engagement.
