Boggabri Golf Club hosted its annual Veterans Open Day last Friday which attracted 41 players who contested the Burke Shield.

Boggabri’s Milton Scaysbrook welcomed players who travelled from Narrabri, Gunnedah, Barraba, Werris Creek, Nundle, Quirindi, Murrurundi, Tamworth Longyard and Manilla to join the local golfers.

Despite the dreadful drought conditions there were not many complaints from players except for the flies – there were numerous complaints about them.

However there were no complaints regarding the catering with loads of compliments to the ladies who provided morning tea and a delicious lunch including sweets.

“The Burke Shield has been played for since 1980 and at each venue there is a winning team on the day and at the end of the year there is an overall team winner”, Bob Atchinson from Quirindi explained.

The over-80s got a special mention and a golf ball.

The oldest player on the day was 92 year old Harry Hubbard from Gunnedah who was celebrating his birthday on the day.

Results from the day are as follows:

First division:

Winner – Peter York (Barraba) with 35 points, runner-up – Bob Atchison (Quirindi) with 33 points, third – Vic Porter (Werris Creek) with 31 points.

Second division:

Winner – Brian Porter (Werris Creek) with 35 points, runner-up – Allan Flanagen (Murrurundi) with 34 points (countback), third – Daphne Pearson (Longyard) with 34 points.

Third division:

Winner – Danny Donoghue (Quirindi) with 35 points, runner up – Peter Upperton (Quirindi) with 30 points, third – Larissa Melssen (Longyard) with 27 points (countback).

Burke Shield: Boggabri with 90 points (Jeff Harper, Milton Scaysbrook, Les Gardoll), Barraba 88, Longyard/Narrabri 87.

Nearest to pin: Hole 2/11 – Peter Upperton (Qurindi), hole 6/15 – Peter York (Barraba), hole 2nd shot 1/10 – Peter York (Barraba).

The next open day is the Spring Ridge Open Day on Friday, September 13, at Werris Creek.
