Each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, 15 paper delivery boys and girls set off from The Courier building to deliver the local paper to hundreds of Narrabri households, maintaining a 100 year tradition.
The home paper delivery, which reaches into virtually every street in Narrabri, is a tradition The Courier is proud to maintain.
And The Courier is proud of its paper boys and girls, many of whom sign on for the duration of their secondary schooling years.
For the paper boys and girls the paper run is not only the means of earning money, it is a valuable source of experience and an entry into the world of commerce.
Paper boys and girls earn their ‘income’, learn to handle money, develop responsiblity and gain confidence in interacting with people.
And every year proud paper boys and girls display the fruits of their labours – some buy their first car, others buy computers and computer games, others buy musical instruments – some costing thousands of dollars.
And it’s handy to have money to spend after prudently banking most of it each week.
For young people later applying for a job, an entry on their CV detailing their work as a paper delivery person gives a strong message to an employer looking for people who have a track record of commitment and responsibility.
And they provide a much appreciated service in Narrabri.
Their regular customers look forward to their arrival and a chat.
For some in the community the paper delivery person is a link to the community they may not otherwise have.
At the moment The Courier is seeking paper boys and girls to learn runs firstly as a backup then to take on a run as older paper boys and girls retire.
You can be a paper delivery boy or girl, if you are 12 years of age or older.
The Courier prefers deliveries are made on a bike. You need a bike with a rack and a box for the papers. If you don’t have a bike, The Courier has some available.
And a whistle, the most important tool of the trade.
Please phone The Courier, 6792 1011 if you would like to learn more about being a paper boy or girl or call into the office at 60 Maitland Street, Narrabri.
