An innovative project which aims to embrace new residents from overseas into the community is successfully running in Narrabri.
The Narrabri English Language Network was conceived by Narrabri’s Jill Jollow and Julia Berney and has drawn strong support from its ‘students’ and volunteer English language instructors.
“The aim was to help migrants improve their English language skills with regular classes” said Mrs Berney.
The new skills will enable people with limited English to more easily communicate as they grow their skills, navigate the day to day community life outside their homes, make friends and move more comfortably in the community.
There has been strong interest and classes will be ongoing, and growing, drawing on Narrabri Shire’s large multicultural community.
The ‘bigger picture’ will see development of more social skills and adjustment to life in country Australia.
Narrabri Shire Council is supportive of the project and mayor Cathy Redding and Tourism Manager Penny Jobling were at a recent morning tea ‘get together’ for the students.
Ms Jobling and the council are working towards a program which will see more ‘multicultural’ engagement to welcome newcomers to the shire.
