A recent ABC radio interview with legendary Hollywood cowboy Hopalong Cassidy’s biographer, Dr Derrham Groves, drew forth some interesting comments from the author. “Hopalong Cassidy (Hollywood actor Williams Boyd) visited Australia in 1954,” said Dr Groves. “He was a massive hit with seven to nine year old boys – every boy played cowboys and Indians in those days. Nowadays, no kids have ever heard of cowboys and Indians.” And does hopscotch still exist? Do kids build billycarts? It was interesting to see traditional events like the egg and spoon race, three legged race and sack race at the Back to the ‘Bri.
