Narrabri-owned-and-trained pacer Kid Montana has done it again.
On Saturday afternoon the five-year-old gelding, owned by Narrabri’s Nathan and Charles Dicks, Peter, Chris and Garry Shepherdson and Neil Drysdale, raced to his second Albion Park victory in just his fifth start at the Queensland metro track.
Kid Montana took full advantage of his pole position barrier draw, winning the 1660-metre TAB Band Five Pace by just over a metre in the second race of a 10-race program.
He did so with a mile rate of 1:53.7, his best at the track in his five races there.
Driven by Chris Shepherdson, Kid Montana started well and led by a length when the bell sounded.
The Grant Dixon-trained-and-driven $2.50 favourite Makoa was also travelling well and was in a good position hot on Kid Montana’s heels with a lap remaining.
With 400 metres to go Kid Montana led Makoa by a neck.
The Narrabri pacer then exited the final turn with a healthy lead with just 200 metres to run.
Kid Montana, Makoa and the Donny Smith-trained, Nathan Dawson-driven Ketut emerged as the three pacers that would secure the podium finishes, and with a brilliant run home down the home straight it was Kid Montana which got the job done, capturing a 1.3-metre victory in the biggest race of his career.
It was a win which saw the Narrabri pacer secure the $7,646 winner’s prizemoney, the most he has ever earned in a single race.
It took his 2019-20 season prizemoney earnings to $17,051 after just four races with a 4-2-0-1 record, and his career prizemoney earnings to $87,253 with a 52-18-7-7 record.
