Work on a replacement for the old single lane Tarriaro bridge cross the Namoi river will get underway from next week.

The bridge was once described by former Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries as ‘the most dangerous bridge in the district.’

Tyre skid marks on the approaches are a testament to ‘near misses’ as vehicles have approached simultaneously from either end.

Narrabri Shire Council has advised that the bridge will be closed from Monday, November 25 to April next year.

A new $1.78m two lane bridge, funded under the NSW Government’s Regional Growth Fund program will be built and the first step is the removal of the single lane bridge.

The Tarriaro bridge, built in 1975, is nowadays carrying a much heavier volume than was envisaged when it was built.

Agriculture and mining vehicles, plus local traffic and tourists using the route to and from the Kamilaroi Highway has increased.
