Narrabri Shire Council is inviting people and organisations to submit suggestions or requests for a share in the latest $1 million in federal government drought funds allocated to the shire.
The Australian Government has announced it will provide an additional $128 million under the Drought Communities Program Extension under which eligible councils will be able to apply for $1 million worth of local infrastructure and drought relief projects.
Narrabri Shire Council is currently investigating suitable infrastructure and community-based projects that meet the specific criteria of the program and is asking the community to suggest projects or ideas.
The program has particular purposes in its sights.
“The funding has strict eligibility guidelines and criteria that must be adhered to” said the mayor, Cathy Redding.
“Specifically, the funding targets projects that provide work for people whose employment has been impacted by drought, stimulate local community spending, use local resources, businesses and suppliers or provide a long-lasting benefit to communities and the agricultural industries they depend on.
“Council is currently taking suggestions from the community online via a short survey which can be accessed on Council’s website and there are hard copies of the survey available at all Shire Libraries.
“This is an opportunity for the community to have a say in projects that have the potential to make positive improvements to the Shire while using local resources and encouraging local spending during these difficult times.
“All suggestions will be compiled and those that meet the requirements and timelines set by the Federal Government will be considered” said the mayor.
“Due to the time constraints surrounding application and project completion deadlines, projects that can be quickly accomplished and are ‘shovel ready’ will be best suited to this particular funding stream.”
If you are a community member who has an idea, the survey can be accessed at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/S3HJPT8
Hard copies are available at the Boggabri, Narrabri, and Wee Waa Libraries.
The survey will close 5pm Friday, November 29.
