The Courier has been part of the Narrabri Shire community since 1913 and in 2020 celebrates its centenary as an independent newspaper, locally owned by the Dunnet family.

This year The Courier will mark the milestone with a ball at The Crossing Theatre – the theme will be ‘A family, a newspaper and a country town – a shared journey of 100 years.’

The business has been conducted by one family over the past 100 years when John Shearer Dunnet bought the North Western Courier in May 1920.

There is nothing unique about that, many rural properties and some businesses have much longer lineages, but in the world of communications, particularly in country towns, a century milestone is perhaps remarkable and certainly a source of pride.

The Courier has not succumbed to pressures of corporate ownership, the takeovers and mergers which have embraced most NSW rural newspapers, or the profound technological change and disruption which has impacted on businesses of all kinds, particularly the communications media, and has weathered the ups and downs of seasons and economic life in a rural community.

The Courier is proud to remain principally a print publication but with a strong and growing online commitment.

The Courier is a local business in every sense – local ownership, with 14 local employees (plus 16 paper delivery boys and girls) local production and is passionate about the local community.

And these elements will be celebrated at The Courier Centenary Ball on June 6, 2020.

“We hope to welcome the Narrabri Shire community to join us, from current and former employees, paperboys and girls past and present, valued local business associates, correspondents, and of course, our readers,” said manager Mrs Wanda Dunnet.

The Centenary Ball will recognise The Courier’s 100 years in business as a local paper, but also the past 100 years of our Narrabri Shire community – a shared journey through good times and challenging times.
