Three Narrabri harness racing trainers had pacers in action at the Tamworth Paceway on Tuesday afternoon and one local driver also took the reins at the Tamworth Harness Racing Club’s TAB meeting.
The driver was Chris Shepherdson who was in the sulky for the Garry Shepherdson-trained Sumthin Special in the second race of the day.
Sumthin Special started the 2360-metre race from pole position as the $2.70 favourite and secured a 1.9-metre victory.
The eight-year-old bay mare raced for owners Nathan and Charles Dicks, Peter, Chris and Garry Shepherdson and Neil Drysdale for just the fourth time on Thursday and secured not only her first win but her first top-three finish for the Narrabri group.
In the seventh race of the meeting local trainer Jarred Hetherington had two pacers in action, one of which secured a second-placed finish across the 1609-metre distance.
That was eight-year-old gelding Corporal Luna which started his 186th career race from the number six barrier on the front line.
Driven by Tom Ison, Corporal Luna finished less than one-and-a-half metres behind the Peter Bullock-trained, Travis Bullock-driven winner Smack Dab Shannon.
The other Hetherington-trained pacer in that race was Padrisimo which finished ninth in the field of 10.
In the eighth and final race of Thursday’s meeting at the Tamworth Paceway, Hetherington and Ison combined for another top-three finish.
In that 1980-metre race the Hetherington-trained Sir Macador started from the number four barrier in the front line as the $1.60 favourite.
The six-year-old gelding placed third after running past the finish post nine-and-a-half metres behind the Gregory Coney-trained, Jemma Coney-driven winner Queens Angel.
Earlier in the day the Peter Shepherdson-trained, Chris Shepherdson-driven Capital Cullect finished fourth in race six.
