Narrabri High School student Sara Charles is the winner of the 2020 Lillian Hulbert Prize.

The prestigious – and valuable – annual prize is presented to a young Narrabri person, aged between 15 and 18, each year who fulfils a range of citizenship criteria which can include academic achievement, sporting prowess, volunteering and community work.

Eligible nominees must live within a 55km radius of Narrabri Post Office.

The prize, $11,500, is held in trust until the recipient reaches their majority. Sara was nominated for her charitable and volunteer activities, volunteering her time in school and community, including assisting with Narrabri Pony Club and Riding for the Disabled, working as a Narrabri Show volunteer, volunteering for NOSH Narrabri, the Eulah Creek Machinery Day, and her involvement with Karar School of Dance and Narrabri Way Church.

The annual prize was established in 2007 by Thomas Whipp Hulbert in memory of his mother, Lillian Alice Hulbert, and first awarded in 2008.

In the ensuing years the winners have been Jenna Baxter (2019), Dylan Dixon (2018), April Squire (2017), Courtney Boyd (2016), Gemma Ferguson (2015), Sally Maher (2014), Emily Grellman (2013), Erika Anderson (2012), Thomas Vaessen (2011), Georgia Barden (2010), Daniel Cope (2009) and Jonathan Cuell was the inaugural winner on February 25, 2008 and was presented with his medallion on March 18, 2009.
