The Lions Club of Narrabri will have a new representative at the Lion’s Youth of the Year regional final after Meagan Dampney took out the top prize at the Narrabri club’s final on Tuesday night at the RSL club.

Meagan, 17, edged out three competitors, Sara Charles, Alex Loder and Andrew Coleman, on her way to the regional final.

The students were mentored throughout the process by Narrabri High School’s David Pierce and NHS’ deputy principal Leo Kolmajer.

In the first stage of the competition students are interviewed which tests the competitors’ general knowledge of the town and international events as well as personal questions about how they contribute to the community.

The second stage features a speech and two impromptu questions which the competitors have two minutes each to answer.

Meagan, the daughter of Kylie and Tony Dampney, won both stages and will now advance to the regional finals on March 14 at the Narrabri RSL Club.

Meagan will come up against tough competition at the regional final which includes representatives from Wee Waa and Tamworth.

Meagan said she was proud to be the representative for Narrabri.

“It’s an honour to be able to represent the club at the next stage. It will be good to compete against the other towns,” she said.
