Maddison Everson has put the finishing touches to the decorations on a veteran Corolla and the car and its crew will set off on the 3500 kilometre long Riverina Redneck Rally on Saturday morning.

On board will be Russell Everson and Paul Hurrell who will crew the Corolla, sponsored by Wee Waa Surf Club, the Imperial Hotel and Radar Security and join 96 other cars and crews at West Wyalong on Saturday to start the rally.

The crews will be taking part in the River Redneck Rally and raising funds for Country Hope, a family centred support organisation for children diagnosed with cancer and other life threatening illnesses.

“We haven’t been told the route, but we start at West Wyalong and finish at Nelson Bay in six days’ time,” said Russell.

He’s confident that the aged Corolla, bought for $600, is up to the journey. Apart from the decoration by Maddison Everson the car hasn’t undergone any special preparation in readiness for its journey over what will undoubtedly include some rough outback roads.

“It’s recently done 59,000 km and hasn’t missed a beat,” Russell said.

“The rally organisers warn ‘there will be rough and corrugated roads so be prepared. If you want to modify your vehicle i.e. shocks, lift kits etc., that is up to you, however it is not needed.”

Fortunately, Paul Hurrell is a mechanic and can draw on his skills if required.
