The phrase ‘Kid Montana has done it again’ is one that has been used so often in recent history, and on Saturday evening it was well and truly time to say it again.
For the second time in a week the five-year-old gelding raced to an Albion Park victory for owners Nathan and Charles Dicks, Peter, Chris and Garry Shepherdson and Neil Drysdale.
After claiming first place on Saturday, February 22, at the Albion Park Harness Racing Club, Kid Montana remained in Queensland for the week with successful trainer and driver Lola Weidemann.
Weidemann then drove the Narrabri pacer on Saturday evening in the first race of the Albion Park meeting which was run across a 2138-metre distance.
The pair combined for what was the pacer’s fifth win of the season in 11 starts, his 22nd win in 59 career races and his fourth win in seven starts at the Queensland metropolitan track.
Kid Montana started the TAB Band Four/Band Two pace from the second row in the number 12 saddlecloth on Saturday.
Shortly after the race had begun he was running second to last about nine lengths behind the leader.
However in a matter of seconds the Narrabri pacer had powered his way past five other runners to move into sixth, three back on the inside lane.
When the bell sounded to signal that there was just one 1019-metre lap left to run Kid Montana was in fifth place, still three back on the inside lane.
Leading the way was the $2.70 favourite Sole Ambition which started the race from pole position.
With 400 metres left to race Kid Montana was running easily, unable to get clear.
However during the final turn Weidemann was able to drive Kid Montana four wide and he eventually entered the final straight about five wide, the widest of all front runners.
The Narrabri pacer showed his heart and late-race speed to power down the start to a 3.3-metre win.
He overtook the Donny Smith-trained, Lachie Manzelmann-driven Sole Ambition just before the finish post to earn what was a memorable victory to claim the $7,750 top prizemoney. That took his lifetime earnings to an impressive $110,298.
