The Courier was congratulated on its milestone centenary by South Australian industry colleagues at the South Australia Country Press awards dinner in Adelaide on Saturday.
The state event was also the occasion for the annual meeting of the national regional newspaper body, Country Press Australia with the NSW Country Press Association’s vice president Wanda Dunnet representing NSW.
“The South Australian conference and the Country Press Australia meeting reaffirmed the vital role and reach of regional newspapers,” Mrs Dunnet said.
“The importance of regional newspapers, in print and online, is well recognised in the communities they serve.
“The value of community newspapers was underlined by the presence at the awards dinner of many South Australia Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly parliamentarians from all sides of state politics.”
The majority of SA regional newspapers are independent, as is the case in Victoria.
This year The Courier celebrates its centenary as an independent local newspaper in one family’s ownership.
One of the attendees at the SA Country Press Association dinner was former Narrabri resident Glenn Toogood, previously with Santos, now General Manager Exploration and Appraisal Services for oil and gas, with exploration and production company Beach Energy, based in South Australia.
