For the first time in 12 days the number of new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in NSW has been less than 100.

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant joined Premier Gladys Berejiklian at a press conference this morning and said that as at 8pm on Thursday, April 2, there had been an increase of 91 confirmed cases in a 24-hour period, taking the state’s number of confirmed cases to 2389.

The last time the number of confirmed cases in a 24-hour period was below 100 was on Sunday, March 22, when 97 new cases were announced.

Dr Chant described today’s figures as “pleasing”

“That’s pleasing to see a sustained reduction and that’s in the testing of reasonably high testing rate,” Dr Chant said.

Premier Berejiklian said that NSW was holding its own in relation to the number of cases.

“We’ve seen the number of cases go up every day,” she said.

“But the number of new cases we’ve managed to stabilise at this point in time.”

However, the Premier said that the spread of cases from an unknown source was a concern.

“What concerns us greatly in NSW is the number of cases that are being acquired without us knowing the source,” she said.

“That is what we call the community to community transmission and that is something that we had to keep mindful of and something that our health experts are most worried about here in NSW.

“That’s why we have to maintain our vigilance, that’s why all of us have to keep sticking to the rules.”

Nation-wide Australia’s death toll has risen to 25 following the death of a man in his 80s at a Melbourne hospital.

As at 6am today there have been 5,224 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Australia, an increase of 248 confirmed cases since 6am yesterday.
