Readers responded to identify the ‘animal, vegetable or mineral’ picture, below, from photographer Bruce Malcolm in last Thursday’s Courier. “The picture is of Sticky Beaks, also known as Cobbler Pegs,” said Bruce. “The idea came into my head as I was removing some of them from our dog. They are devilish little things.” One correspondent, Allan Cameron, indentified the sticky beaks, ‘a less attractive member of the Daisy family, and nearly as hard to get out of your socks as Bruce’s other photo of African Star Grass (Bohena Beauty) seed” Allan observed. Bruce has been experimenting with different subjects for macro photography – more are in the pipeline for coming issues, ordinary objects in nature but unusual when seen through a macro lens.
