An enforceable undertaking has been entered into by Narrabri Coal Operations and the Environmental Protection Authority following disposal of self-rescuer units at the Narrabri Landfill.

The EU states the $120,000 will be held in an environmental trust and can only be used for the purposes of contributing to a new cell at the landfill.  The facts surrounding the events are contained in the publicly accessible EU document.

The EU was agreed upon by the mine and the EPA with no involvement from Narrabri Shire Council. This is a matter between the mine and the EPA.

The money is being provided to Council from the EPA Environmental Trust for the purpose of assisting in establishing a new general waste cell at the landfill.

Preliminary rehab work has commenced with the remainder to occur over the next few months.

There is no adopted timeframe for the development of a new cell yet, planning for a new waste cell is currently being undertaken.

Separate to this incident, and under normal operation the current waste cell at the Narrabri Landfill is approaching capacity. Planning has been underway for some time to develop a new waste cell.

Council’s development of a new waste cell is not related to the subject incident.

Council has a number of strategic planning processes underway to cater for the expected growth of the Shire and the needs of the region; these planning processes include the continuous provision of essential services such as waste management. Council’s waste management is part of the future planning which includes additional capacity as required.
