Narrabri Junior Rural Fire Service volunteer Shauna Cassidy is preparing for adventure on the high seas aboard the 44 metre sailing ship Young Endeavour.
Shauna won the NSW RFS Young Member’s Award for 2020 and in addition to the honour recognition of her service to the RFS and community wins a place as a crew member aboard the Young Endeavour on a 10 day cruise down the east coast of Australia.
The award is a leadership program for 16 to 25 year olds which recognises active service by young RFS members and aims to help develop their leadership potential.
Shauna, 18, the daughter of Narrabri RFS Brigade captain Greg Cassidy and Laurie Cassidy, has been a member of the RFS since she was 13.
Shauna’s voyage was to have set off in May or June but a new date for embarkation is yet to be made, because of COVID-19 restrictions, and is now likely to be about October.
Shauna acknowledged she was excited to be boarding the Young Endeavour.
“It will be my first time on the water” she said.
The 239 tonne Young Endeavour, 44 metres long, and with a beam of 28.6 metres, is ‘brigantine rigged’ and is a true ‘tall ship’, with a 32 metre main mast.
Auxiliary power comes from two 165 horsepower Perkins diesel engines
