Narrabri Shire Council has been successful in securing $233,200 of Federal Government funding to further assist biosecurity management of pest animals and weeds.

This successful funding allows Council to:
• Undertake weed biosecurity control actions to prevent infestations in the project area.
• Minimise the impact of pest animals through strategic and coordinated pest animal control measures, improving agricultural production outcomes for landholders and reducing the burden on native species.
• Provide landholders, community groups and Landcare with control measures to combat pest animals and weeds in the targeted project area.
• Increase public education regarding proper management of pest animals and weed biosecurity matters.

“Council is extremely happy to receive a second round of funding to continue assisting in combatting biosecurity and pest animal issues.

“The targeted area will be the Brigalow Creek, Bundock/Middle Creek and Yarrie Lake areas,” Narrabri Shire Council Mayor Cathy Redding said.

“With Parthenium weed being discovered in the Shire after recent rain, it is important we remain proactive about biosecurity issues.

“This funding will assist us in keeping feet on the ground and offer support to landowners in the Shire.

“Council will work with Biosecurity Officers from the North West Local Land Services to facilitate coordinated pest animal control and maintain engagement across the project area. Landholders will benefit directly from this project with a strategic broad scale approach to working in agricultural areas addressing pest numbers and weed issues.

“This funding program shows how landholders who work together can benefit. With many years of drought, it is important that landholders looking to re-stock can do so without the detrimental effects of pest competition and land degradation.”

The funding has been granted through Round Two of the Federal Government’s – Communities Combating Pests and Weed Impacts During Drought Program (Biosecurity Management of Pests and Weeds).
