Three Wee Waa Bowling Club bowlers travelled to Inverell Sporties at the weekend where they were all part of the final eight of their respective Zone Three State Singles competitions.

Following a successful weekend for the club, Justin Knight was crowned Open Singles champion, Dustyn Allen won the President Reserve Singles final and Steve Berger qualified for the Senior Singles final but went down.

In doing so the trio made history, becoming the first three bowlers from the same club to make all three Zone 3 State Singles finals in the same year.

The Wee Waa bowlers all played two matches on Saturday followed by their finals on Sunday.

On Saturday morning Knight took on 2017 Zone 3 Open Singles champion Scott Hamilton in the quarter-final.

Knight scored a convincing 31-15 win against the Inverell bowler to advance to the semi-final that afternoon in which he challenged Lightning Ridge’s Phillip Morris.

Knight won that contest 31-16.

15-year-old Allen took on Tamworth’s Norman Dezius in the pair’s quarter-final showdown and the Wee Waa youngster scored a 31-8 victory before cruising past Peter Fox 31-15 in the semi-final.

Berger challenged Tamworth bowler Jeff Myers in his quarter-final and won 31-10, then met Moree’s Lesley Tighe in the semi-final and beat him 31-30 in a nailbiter.

On Sunday all three Wee Waa bowlers suited up in their green and yellow uniforms to play their respective finals.

Knight challenged West Tamworth’s Nick Golledge and won 31-15 to be crowned champion, Allen took on Moree’s Michael Ivanov and scored a 31-17 victory to be crowned champion, and Berger fell just short as he went down 31-25 against Glen Innes’ Dennis Williams.

Each of the zone champions now qualifies for the Bowls NSW State Championships which were scheduled from October 9-18 at Ettalong Bowling Club but have recently been postponed.
