Wee Waa High School Year 8 students O’Shea Green and James Williams recently received Certificates of Merit from Coonamble based Senior Constable Kylie Ellsmore at a special school assembly.

O’Shea’s younger brother Rashard, who is in Year 5, was also awarded a Certificate of Merit at a Wee Waa Public School assembly.

Senior Constable Ellsmore and her colleague Teleira Milson, the Aboriginal community liaison officer for the Coonamble area, travelled to Wee Waa for the special assembly and said it was great honour to award a Certificate of Merit, for the first time in their careers.

The award came with the news that the students will receive Bravery Awards from the NSW State Police Commissioner Mick Fuller in the coming months.

The award is in recognition of the bravery the three young students showed after the driver of a car they were recently travelling in suffered a medical episode.

The driver was O’Shea and Rashard Green’s father Ernest, he became unconscious and the car, that was believed to be travelling at about 100 kilometres per hour, careered off the road about 15 kilometres out of Coonamble.

Missing trees, the car eventually came to rest in a ploughed paddock.

The boys were shaken but not injured.

They immediately called Triple-zero and family who attended the scene to offer help, and got the driver out of the car and checked he was breathing.

Their quick-thinking and cool-headed actions resulted in the ambulance arriving at the scene quickly.

Ernest Green is understood to be doing well.

Senior Constable Ellsmore said she was delighted to be able to recognise the students for such commendable behaviour.
