Contractors will be restarting work on stage two of the Maitland Street CBD project on January 4.

The big makeover of Narrabri’s main street has been halted to clear the way for Christmas shopping.

“The work involves the replacement of the road pavement on the west side of Maitland Street from Lloyd Street to Dewhurst Street, the opposite side to the work which has been completed,” a council spokesperson said.

“These works will be undertaken in a similar manner to stage one.

“This means pedestrian access to all shop fronts will be maintained. Manned pedestrian crossings will be provided at the locations of the existing pedestrian crossings near roundabouts to allow people to cross the road works area.

“One side of the road will be closed at a time while maintaining one-way traffic along Maitland Street in the work area.

“Detours will be in place at all times to direct traffic around the work site.

“Council appreciates the patience of the community and business owners as these required infrastructure improvement works are completed.

“The work involved includes excavation and removal of existing road bitumen and gravel material from Lloyd Street to Bowen Street and replacement with new layered asphalt road, providing a durable, smooth and long lasting road surface, the reduction in size of some garden bed areas to make way for additional car parks.

“There will be replacement of roundabout pavers at Dewhurst Street and Doyle Street with new concrete apron slabs to improve durability.

“Kerbs and median areas in the vicinity of Dewhurst Street and Doyle Street will be rebuilt to improve vehicle visibility of pedestrians and improve ride quality through the roundabouts. Asphalt patching of trenched areas at Lloyd Street and Bowen Street roundabouts will provide a durable and smooth surface and line marking of the new road surface.”
