The Narrabri District Cricket Association’s 2020-21 Coates Hire T20 Namoi Super Slog competition is now two rounds old after matches were contested on Friday and Saturday night.
The four teams provided crowds with entertaining cricket, with sixes flying over the fence, wickets falling in a variety of ways and fielders showing off their skills with some impressive catches and run outs.
WTC Earthmoving started strongest with two wins from as many matches to finish round two on top of the table.
Priag Marketing and defending champions Specialised Civil Services both won a game each and are second and third, and winless Rose Pest Control finished round two in last place.
WTC Earthmoving produced one of the most dominant wins in Narrabri T20 cricket history, demolishing Specialised Civil Services by 10 wickets at Collins Park in round one.
Specialised Civil Services batted first and made 61 from 16.5 overs, before WTC Earthmoving openers Mick Dowdell (36*) and Cody Kember (23*) chased down the required total in just 6.2 overs.
Earlier in the match, four of the five WTC Earthmoving bowlers took wickets. Skipper Justin Knight (3-7 from 2.5 overs) and NDCA one day first grade competition leading wicket taker Matt Tubner (3-11 from four overs) claimed three each, Ryan O’Neill (2-19 from four overs) bagged two and Tim Shields (1-7 from three overs) chipped in with one. Knight also claimed a run out.
Specialised Civil Services captain and opening batsman Nick Smart top scored for his team with 27.
The other round one match was contested at Hogan Oval between Priag Marketing and Rose Pest Control.
Priag Marketing skipper Lachlan Cameron elected to bat first after winning the toss and his side finished its 20 overs on 5-139. In reply, Rose Pest Control could only reach 97 runs for the loss of seven wickets in its 20 overs.
Priag Marketing’s Josh Trindall opened the batting in that match and fell two runs short of the first half century of the competition. He scored 48 from 33 balls, which included three fours and two sixes, to get his side off to a positive start.
Fellow top order batsman Cooper Brayshaw (17 from 10) and middle order duo Bernard O’Connor (10*) and Luke Meppem (32* from 18) made handy contributions to help their side set a defendable total.
Rose Pest Control’s Charlie Simkin (2-34 from three overs) was his team’s only multiple wicket taker before he top-scored in his side’s chase with an unbeated run-a-ball 26.
The side’s opener Toby Reynolds (15) and first drop Nick Tomlinson (14) also contributed double digit scores for the chasing team.
Priag Marketing duo Joel Hogan (2-17 from four overs) and Luke Baker (2-18 from four overs) were their side’s best with the ball.
In round two on Saturday night, Specialised Civil Services bounced back from its round one loss to score a 23-run win against Priag Marketing at Collins Park.
Specialised Civil Services batted first again and made 99 runs in 19.4 overs before restricting Priag Marketing to 76 in 17.5 overs.
Specialised Civil Services opener Smart starred again with 41 runs from 43 deliveries. His innings included four fours and a six.
He combined for a 59-run opening-wicket partnership with Chris Sargent (15) who was first to fall.
Jay Hall (13 from 12) chipped in with the only other double-digit score from number seven.
Priag Maketing’s best with the ball was Clay Hoffman (3-17 from four overs) who dismissed Specialised Civil Services’ top three batsmen.
Cooper Brayshaw (3-12 from 2.4 overs) also claimed three wickets.
Priag Marketing’s chase got off to a horror start as Specialised Civil Services’ Chris Sargent opened the bowling and ripped through the top order.
Sargent knocked over Chris Smith for two, Josh Trindall for a duck, Nathan Trindall for a golden duck and Luke Meppem for 12 to make the score 4-22 after 5.4 overs.
Skipper Cameron (5) and middle order batsman Brayshaw (1) both departed cheaply and the score became 6-31.
Jade Lees (14) and Bernard O’Connor (17*) provided some resistance, but three runouts took the score from 6-66 to 9-67.
Jordyn Mowle bowled Hoffman (1) to secure the win for his side and finish with 2-15 from 3.5 overs.
Sargent (4-4 from three overs) finished the match with the best figures of the competition so far.
In the other round two game, WTC Earthmoving scored a four-wicket win at Hogan Oval.
Rose Pest Control batted first after skipper Ty Baker won the toss, and the side was bowled out for 82 in 16.5 overs. WTC Earthmoving chased down the required total with less than two overs to spare after losing six wickets.
Rose Pest Control’s top four batsmen combined for just 16 runs as WTC Eathmoving opening bowler Ryan O’Neill ripped through the opposition top order.
He knocked over openers Baker (8) and Brandon Couley (8), and removed Steve Phelps (0) and Jake Thurston (0) for second-ball ducks to make the score 4-22 after seven overs.
O’Neill bowled all four of his overs at the start of the innings and ended with a game-best 4-15.
Rose Pest Control middle order trio Sid Harvey (15 from 21), Jock Small (18 from 13) and Nathan Hamblin (17 from 13) all chipped in with handy scores, and all three hit a six each as they got their side’s innings back on track.
However, WTC Earthmoving’s Matt Tubner (3-16 from 2.5 overs), Justin Knight (2-6 from two overs) and Harry Pattison (1-18 from two overs) ripped through the middle order and tail as Rose Pest Control could only manage 82 runs in 16.5 overs.
WTC Earthmoving’s chase suffered blow after blow as the side stumbled to 5-43 after 10 overs.
Top five batsmen Cody Kember (0), Mick Dowdell (11), Alistair Wheeler (6), Matt Conroy (0) and Jarrett Tough (4) all fell cheaply.
WTC Earthmoving required 40 runs from the second half of the innings with just five wickets in hand but got the job done.
Tim Hayne entered at six and scored a match-winning 27 runs from 28 deliveries before Knight (13*) and Tim Shields (9*) got the side home.
The pick of the bowlers for Rose Pest Control were young guns Will Ford (1-5 from four overs) and Noah Mace (1-9 from one over).
The competition will resume in 2021 with round three matches on Friday, January 8. WTC Earthmoving will challenge Priag Marketing at Collins Park, while Specialised Civil Services will play against Rose Pest Control at Hogan Oval.
