Wee Waa boy and former Narrabri District Cricket Association cricketer Dylan Smith will line up in this weekend’s Tamworth District Cricket Association first grade grand final when his team takes on North Tamworth at Riverside One.

In his first season in the TDCA competition, Smith’s Old Boys placed third out of six teams on the first grade ladder.

The two-day competition’s semi-finals were then washed out on Saturday and Sunday, March 13 and 14, which meant that Old Boys (being the higher-ranked team in the minor-semi final) progressed to last weekend’s preliminary final.

In that must-win match, the third-ranked side defeated second-placed City United in a rain-affected game.

On Saturday, Old Boys won the toss and skittled its opponents for just 73 after sending them into bat.

Smith took 2-12 from eight overs in that innings to back up his openers Aaron Hazlewood (4-30 from 24 overs) and Troy Sands (3-18 from nine overs) who at one stage had City United struggling at 4-7.

Old Boys then finished the day on 6-79 which meant that they claimed the first innings win.

That was eventually the deciding factor after rain forced the following day’s play to be abandoned.

Old Boys will now meet first-placed North Tamworth this weekend to play for the first grade championship.

Smith has already enjoyed grand final glory in the 2020-21 season back in November when Old Boys smashed City United by 105 runs in the one day competition decider.

He and his Old boys teammates will be hoping to win their second premiership of the season this weekend when they meet an opponent which they have beaten once from two attempts in the 2020-21 campaign.
