Narrabri Dirt Bike Club’s 2021 motocross season began at the Newtown Park track on Sunday with an entertaining first round which was dominated by local riders.
There were 44 riders in action at the first official motocross event since Saturday, February 29, and Sunday, March 1, 2020, when the club hosted round two of Motorcycling NSW’s state-wide King of MX Series.
No more events were held in Narrabri that year amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting social distancing restrictions placed on community sport.
But the club bounced back in style on Sunday with its round one event which was labelled a success by Narrabri Dirt Bike Club president Paul Lehmann.
Narrabri riders were in fine form on the day and several were among the podium finishers.
In the juniors, Ebony Lehmann won the 50cc Auto division, Oliver Lehmann, Lewis Penberthy and Lincoln Bourke finished first, second and third respectively in 65cc 7-under-10 division and Charlie Bennett place second in Junior Lites.
In the seniors, Wayne Sparrow and Ben Penberthy finished first and second respectively in the Veteran division, Nathan Suckling won MX1 A-grade, placed second in Senior Lites and placed third in Senior All Powers, Kyle Suckling placed second in Senior All Powers and third in MX1 A-grade and Matt Winkle won MX1 C-grade.
Paul Lehmann said that it was pleasing to have competitive motocross action back at the Newtown Park track.
“We are extremely happy racing’s back here,” Lehmann said.
“It feels like a brand new fresh start.
“Round one certainly ran smoothly and there were no major issues.
“The track came up not too bad given the wet weather. It was a bit of a challenge to get the water off it but overall it all came together quite well.”
Lehmann said that the club was happy to welcome 44 riders from both the Narrabri Shire and from other towns, but added that it was keen to see more in round two.
“The numbers were down a bit, we were hoping for a few more but considering we hadn’t operated for so long I think it was alright,” he said.
“I think we’ll see more numbers at the next few racedays.
“Anyone interested in motocross can come and have a look or have a chat to us and we’ll point you in the right direction on how to get involved.”
Next up for the club is a practise day on Sunday, April 18.
Rounds two to six of the motocross season will then be held on May 9, June 6, July 4, August 22 and September 5 respectively, all of which are Sundays.
