The National Party is confident it will remain in control of the state electorate of Upper Hunter after Saturday’s by-election. Typically, by-elections result in swings against incumbents. While the Nationals suffered a small swing of 2.6 per cent in the first preference count, on a two-party preferred basis it increased 2.8 per cent. Labor’s first preference votes look to have fallen by almost 7 per cent while the Shooters, Farmers and Fishers suffered a 10 per cent swing.
