Narrabri Sporties’ 2021 men’s bowls season got underway on Saturday, May 15, and continued at the weekend.

The Major Singles competition got underway with a thrilling contest which was contested across 42 ends on Saturday, May 15, when Larry Scott defeated Bill Rosewarn by just one shot.

The score was 8-all on the ninth end and 15-all on the 20th end.

Rosewarn led 21-17 on the 24th end, then after 38 ends, Scott led 30-26.

Rosewarn scored 4 shots across the next two ends which left the score 30-all on the 40th end. Requiring one shot to win, both players had a bowl very close to the jack on the 41st end and an umpire was required to determine the winner. Scott was declared the winner by a very narrow margin.

Four Senior Singles matches were also contested that day.

Terry Wilson defeated Anthony Welchman 32-7, Laurie Gilbert downed Ian Macmillan 31-13, Graham Rose outscored Larry Scott 31-21 and Bill Rosewarn beat Rob Wolters 32-25.

In Minor Singles, Rob Wolters received a forfeit from Ron Ryan.

On Saturday, May 22, the Major Singles competition continued and produced some very close results.

Dave Dewar and Rob Wolters met and contested a match that was close from start to finish.

The score was 14-all after 16 ends, 22-all after 25 ends, 27-all on the 29th end and 30-all after 34 ends.

Dewar had the last shot on the 35th end and moved one of his short bowls forward to get the shot and win the game 31-30.

Another close contest saw Len Ryan defeat Scott Dewar by five shots.

Dewar led 19-10 after 18 ends, but Ryan rallied to score 10 shots to 1 across the next seven ends to even the score at 20-all.

Dewar was leading 26-24 on the 30th end but Ryan scored seven unanswered shots across the next two ends to win the game 31-26 after 32 ends.

In an even closer contest, Kevin Baguley defeated Larry Scott by two shots.

Baguley established a large lead early in the contest and was winning the game 28-10 after 23 ends.

Scott then scored 19 shots to 3 across the next nine ends, but that three was all Baguley needed as he held on to win 31-29.

In another Major Singles match, Stewart Coleman defeated Ian Macmillan 31-13 while Graham Rose received a forfeit from Paul Crutcher and Norm Wolford received a forfeit from Nick Scott.

A Minor Singles match saw Bruce Tomlinson defeat Leo Hall 32-16.

In Senior Singles, Tony Redman beat Anthony Welchman by five shots.

Welchman got off to a great start and was leading 22 shots to 8 after 17 ends.

Redman then found the right weight and produced a remarkable comeback. He scored 21 shots to 2 to take a 29 shots to 24 lead, then went on to win 31 shots to 26 after 31 ends.

Minor Singles: Rob Wolters v Col Armstrong (marker – Anthony Welchman).

Senior Singles: David Briggs v Steve Daskey (marker – Graham Rose), Bruce Tomlinson v Len Ryan (marker – Ron Ryan), Terry Wilson v Bill Rosewarn (marker – Laurie Gilbert).
