Following strong performances in music and dance, the 2021 Narrabri Arts Eisteddfod has concluded with a flourish in the popular speech and drama sections.

The adjudicator for these final days of the event was Jill Tucker, who travelled to Narrabri from Wagga Wagga.

All sections over the three days saw strong participation numbers, especially the popular poems for two (in all age groupings) and the years five/six public speaking section.

This category saw twelve well-prepared speeches delivered on the day, with Lilly Thompson from Narrabri Public School taking first place.

In fact, schools within Narrabri Shire reaped impressive results across the board, with St Francis Xavier’s winning the group speech category, just ahead of Narrabri Public School which also put on a great show.

Performers travelled from far and wide to place in a number of categories, which eisteddfod convenor Julie Roy was pleased with.

“It was good to see such support from the outlying schools like Rowena, Burren Junction, Wee Waa, Pilliga, Maules Creek and Bellata and we thank everyone who travelled so far,” she said.

“The support of teachers and parents is very much appreciated.”

Mrs Tucker said it had been a delight to adjudicate the 2021 Narrabri Arts Eisteddfod.

She enjoyed the varied program and her encouraging comments to competitors will help with their future performances.

There was praise for entrants’ preparation, as well as the high standard of presentations.

Eisteddfod president Jacqui Warnock is grateful for another great year of performances, especially given the ongoing pandemic.

“It is rewarding and satisfying to have staged the eisteddfod this year after the disappointment of having to cancel our 25th annual eisteddfod planned for last year,” she said.

“Everyone involved was happy to be back performing again and preparations are already underway for our 2022 eisteddfod.”

Once all results have been collated, major award recipients are advised and presented with their trophies, in addition to the accolades they received during the eisteddfod.

A number of local students have already been recognised as major winners.

Wee Waa and Boggabri did well here, with Sacred Heart’s Georgia Baird winning the Northern Inland Credit Union award for music and two St Joseph’s students – Campbell Collett and Max Vogel – winning the junior and senior speech encouragement awards, respectively.

Meanwhile, Narrabri High School took out three top prizes across the music and dance categories, with Daniel Smith winning the senior encouragement award for music, Paige Hetherington receiving the Kylie Shepherd Memorial award for dance and Steve Bailey taking home the Noeline Wales Memorial award for music.
