Once again Boggabri, the ‘little town with the big heart’ has punched way above its weight to increase breast cancer awareness and raise money for the McGrath Foundation.

Pink, pink and more pink, along with messages of awareness and hope has been the theme in Boggabri during October.

Shop fronts and properties have decorated their windows, signs and fences.

Residents have worn pink clothing and a variety of accessories.

Thanks to a small, dedicated and hard-working committee, numerous fundraising events have been conducted during breast cancer awareness month.

On Sunday, the Boggabri Rotary Pink Angel Family Fun Day was held at the Boggabri Golf Club amassing more than $6000 on the day.

Expected numbers were down due to COVID-19 restrictions but that didn’t stop everyone giving freely and having fun.

Other money is expected to be delivered to the committee during the week with a promised donation of $5000, and takings from other events conducted during October.

A highlight of the day was the cutting of the mastectomy cake made and decorated by Nicole Rixon.

In a gesture of support and hope, several breast cancer survivors cut the cake prior to it being distributed as dessert to those present.

Lunch was an enormous array of lentil patties, potato bake, savoury mince, curried sausages, curried chicken, fried rice, beef stroganoff, barbecued sausages, and cake as dessert.

Adults had the opportunity to sit back relax, catch up with friends and family, listen to or sing-along to the music.

They could also purchase tickets in 100 clubs and raffles, buy cakes, plants, hand-made jewellery, trash and treasure, show their skills with the golf club in the putting competition, vote on their favourite pink up bra or have their valuable jewellery expertly cleaned and checked.

The children were well catered for with the jumping castle, warped wall, putt putt golf, helium balloons, glitter tattoos and hoop-la, colouring in competition.

In Boggabri, the community has had men and women who have had the misfortune to have a breast cancer diagnosis and unfortunately, most people all know of someone either in Boggabri or further afield.

A breast cancer diagnosis changes your life.

The impact can be felt right through your family and friends and sometimes as much as you try the disease can take over your life.

This is where the McGrath Foundation nurses and your family and friends come into their own.
