Eight Narrabri Junior Rugby Club players will line up for Central North at the NSW Junior Rugby Union State Sevens Championships at Forster on Saturday and Sunday, November 20 and 21.

The Central North teams for the under-15s boys and girls and the under-17s boys and girls were named on Monday, with Narrabri players selected in three of the four sides.

Holly Ford and Amalie Gosper were named in the under-15s girls’ team and Miranda Hamilton and Martha Harvey were chosen in the under-17s girls team.

Four junior Blue Boars will link up in the under-17s boys’ team, with Sid Harvey, Bernard O’Connor, Toby Michell-Smith and Zack Mallows all gaining selection.

Former Narrabri Junior Rugby Club and current Narrabri Rugby Club president Mick Coffey said that those selections highlighted just how bright the future of rugby union in Narrabri is.

“I think it’s pretty amazing to have that many players in among those teams,” Coffey told The Courier.

“As far as the zone goes, we sit smack bang in the middle of the ladder as far as population to draw on, and since day dot in the Friday night comp we’ve always copped the raw end of the stick, every comp, as far as having to travel the furthest.

“For those kids to have stuck with it with dedication and to now make those rep teams is great.

“As those players come out of the juniors in a few years’ time, there’s no reason why Central North won’t have a pumping under-20s boys’ comp.

“The women’s game will grow as well, it won’t be able to stay at sevens.

“I think in the near future it will expand to 10s or even 15-aside with the number of players and the quality we have coming through.

“I see, within five years’ time, the depth of the Narrabri seniors is going to be phenomenal.”
