The Wee Waa Lions Club carried on its festive tradition of putting up a Christmas tree at IGA, proving community spirits are high despite the town being isolated by floodwaters.
“We’ve been doing it for years and it looks beautiful,” said Lions president Julie Dowleans OAM.
“It not only looks fabulous, but it also creates a good atmosphere.
“People enjoy driving by at night too and seeing the lights.”
Lions Club members decorated the tree on the weekend, and it’s been one of the town’s main attractions along with the rising water levels.
“People have been checking the levels in the morning and in the afternoon at the lagoon.
“Lagoon bridge area has been a pretty safe place for kids to stand there and have a look.
“People who’ve lived here for a while are used to it, but we’re thinking about the communities around us and the people who have been and will be inundated by water,” added Julie.
Wee Waa newsagency and gift shop proprietor Roxanne Whitton said the community was still getting access to supplies thanks to the help of kind locals including Allan Anderson, John Hoppman, the SES and VRA.
“They’ve brought bread, milk and the papers,” said Mrs Whitton.
“We are feeling safe inside the levee.”
