National Parks and Wildlife Service staff are looking to replace, as quickly as possible, items stolen and damaged in a brazen vandal attack on the popular Sawn Rocks picnic area in Mount Kaputar National Park near Narrabri.
NPWS area manager Marty Linehan said the incident on Tuesday night last week was a blow after what had been a bumper holiday period.
“We have hundreds of people each day visiting Sawn Rocks at this time of the year, with many of them having a picnic or a barbecue as part of their outing.
“Unfortunately, all of those people are now having their enjoyment compromised by the inconsiderate actions of those responsible for the damage and theft,” said Mr Linehan
Vandals struck the Sawn Rocks picnic area in the Mount Kaputar National Park on Tuesday night, damaging the gas barbecues and stealing gas bottles, batteries and a 2200 litre water tank.
Their actions have rendered the barbecue unusable until replacement equipment can be purchased and repairs undertaken.
“I am struggling to understand why anyone would set out to damage community assets in this way,” Mr Linehan said.
“I apologise for any inconvenience to our responsible park visitors, while we undertake the necessary repairs.
“Visitors are still able to use the picnic tables and shelters.
“Other than this incident, large crowds over Christmas and New year at Mount Kaputar have been well behaved and enjoying the great facilities on offer.
“NPWS uses cameras to assist with law enforcement and to monitor illegal activity.
