Three people who are dedicated to various community causes and organisations are in the running to be named Narrabri Shire’s Citizen of the Year on Australia Day.
Patricia Lawty, Patricia Hadley and Des Barton are the three individuals who have been nominated for shire’s top honour.
Patricia Lawty
Mrs Lawty has dedicated time to the community as a member of the Narrabri Pistol Club, junior soccer, basketball and cricket committees and has been treasurer of the Show Auxiliary for 33 years.
Patricia Hadley
Patricia Hadley’s ability to care and her willingness to help others is one of her greatest strengths. Patricia is an active volunteer within the local community.
She is the current president of the Inner Wheel Club of Narrabri, is a past president and the current vocation director of the Rotary Club of Narrabri, president of the Narrabri Parkinson’s Support Group, assistant secretary of the Narrabri RSL sub-branch and is secretary/treasurer of Rocky Creek Rural Fire Service.
She is the main organiser for the monthly Narrabri markets and has a drive, enthusiasm, and sheer ability to get the job done.
Des Barton
Baan Baa’s Des Barton has been a volunteer member of the NSW Rural Fire Service since 1985.
During that time, he has held many positions including Senior Deputy Captain, Deputy Captain and Brigade President, actively assisting in training and recruitment, fighting bushfires and in search and rescue operations.
Community Group Service Award
In addition to the three nominations for Narrabri Shire’s Citizen of the Year, three community groups have been nominated for the Community Group Service Award.
2MaxFM
Narrabri Shire Community Radio Inc 2MAXFM is a local broadcaster of 21 years, always keeping the community informed and entertained with a dedicated volunteer base of announcers.
Narrabri SES
Narrabri SES is dedicated to serving the local community, assisting with flood management, search and rescue operations and helping in times of need.
Narrabri Meals on Wheels
Narrabri Meals on Wheels has been servicing the area for more than 50 years with 180 volunteers assisting aged, frail and people with disabilities in the community.
Winners of the shire’s Australia Day awards will be presented at a private function on Wednesday. A report and photographs from the awards ceremony will be published in Thursday’s Courier.
