Public participation in the decision-making process for the stage three extension of Narrabri’s underground coal mine has been described as essential by the chair of the Independent Planning Commission, Professor Mary O’Kane.

Professor O’Kane forms part of the three-member commission panel that will decide if the application is approved.

The two other members are Professor Snow Barlow and Professor Chris Fell AO.

Professor O’Kane said meaningful engagement is vital when determining big, contentious development applications.

“I’m very keen to ensure that those who have a view on the Narrabri underground extension are heard,” she said.

“It’s particularly helpful to hear the community’s view on the department’s assessment of key issues and how any impacts can be satisfactorily managed, mitigated or offset by imposing conditions of consent.”
