Retaining the heritage of the former Faulkner’s ice and cold storage building is the focus at The Exchange Narrabri as the site’s transformation continues as part of the development.
The building, situated at the Tibbereena Street end of the site, has been a hive of activity as work continues to prepare the community and co-working space for its unveiling this year.
Inside the historic building, the beam work will be visible while adapting the interior to the modern-day needs.
There is also a focus on retaining the building’s brickwork.
The Exchange Narrabri’s sales and business development manager George Gourley said adapting the building to the needs of the development requires a bit of work.
“Our process is protecting the heritage components but adding a modern fitout,” she said.
The Exchange’s founder and chief executive officer Jillian Kilby has spearheaded the emphasis on heritage retention, as she did when developing her initial Exchange in Dubbo.
“Our heritage assets should be preserved for everybody to use.
“We are just the custodians of the building,” she said of Narrabri’s former Faulkner’s site.
Ms Kilby hopes the development will be a great starting point for many people’s business journey.
“Our vision is that in 10 years’ time from now, a business will say that they used The Exchange as a starting point,” she said.
“I feel lucky that we’ve found George Gourley.
“She has the connection with the community.
“It is important to hire locals and to use local trades.”
