The final two rounds of Narrabri Golf Club’s 2021 club championships were contested at the club’s immaculate 18-hole course across the weekend and the winners were crowned on Sunday.
Defending champion Adam Taylor is the men’s club champion for 2021, while Louise Penberthy claimed her first club championship in what was her maiden A-grade appearance.
The 72-hole event was once again contested across four rounds. The first two were played on Saturday and Sunday, February 5 and 6, followed by rounds three and four on Saturday and Sunday, February 12 and 13.
Taylor scored a four-over-par 75 in rounds one and two. Those were the best scores on both days, but he was forced to settle for the gross second-place finish in round one after he was defeated by a fellow former club champ, Josh Orman, on a countback.
Taylor finished the day as runner-up in round three after she shot a seven-over-par 78, and Luke Flood shot a four-over-par 75.
Taylor was runner-up again in round four on Sunday after he finished with a five-over-par 76, three behind Troy Nott who scored a two-over-par 73.
That saw ‘Tubby’, as Taylor is well-known as around the club, finish the four-round event with a combined score of 304, which was 10 off his best club championships score of 294.
He went into the final day’s play five shots clear of second-placed Flood.
However, Flood had reduced that to just one shot after both golfers had completed the third hole.
Taylor kept his composure and an impressive run across the back nine saw him outscore Flood by seven shots on the overall leaderboard to claim his sixth club championship.
The 2021 club champion, who also won the event in 2000, 2003, 2009, 2013 and 2020, told The Courier he was proud to have won it again.
“It feels really good,” Taylor said.
“Sunday was a challenging day but it was a good result.
“I’m pretty proud to have six now and hopefully I can continue.”
Taylor said days three and four both provided much better conditions to play in.
“Days one and two were pretty bad conditions with the wind,” he said.
“It wasn’t the most pleasant of weather to play golf in.
“But the other two were pretty good days.
“I had a good back nine [on Sunday] and for Luke, it definitely wasn’t a bad back nine for him, I just fortunately made a few more putts and that was the day.
“It was a very enjoyable day with the three guys (Luke Flood, Shane Hartog-Smith and Josh Orman). It was a very good group to go out there with.”
Taylor also commended the format of the club championships as well as the condition of the course.
“It’s always a good format to play, the Narrabri champos,” he said.
“I always look forward to playing it.
“The course is in good nick at the moment thanks to the hard work of Mark Campbell and his team.
“I’d also like to thank the committee for running the event.”
Meanwhile, for first-time A-grade ladies player Penberthy, winning the club championships came as quite a shock.
Penberthy shot 96 and 97 in rounds one and two, respectively, and then followed those up with her best score on the Narrabri Golf Club’s 18-hole course in round three on Saturday when she shot a 93.
She followed that up with a 105 on Sunday, which saw her finish the 72-hole four-round event with 391.
That saw Penberthy edge out the A-grade gross runner-up Lyn Shearer by just two shots. Shearer shot 109, 91, 99 and 94 to finish with 393.
“It was a very big shock. I never went in expecting I’d win it,” Penberthy said.
“I’m pretty pleased with my efforts.
“This year was only my second club champs. I played in 2020 in B-grade.
“I’ve only sort of just started going under 100 and 93 is definitely my best score ever.
“I got a 96 last year but generally I’ve only just started going under 100.
“I was really hoping to keep all four scores under 100 but I wouldn’t have a clue what happened [on Sunday].
“I actually thought I’d lost it. I didn’t think I’d won until the cards were in.”
Penberthy, who was the A-grade ladies’ gross winner in round one and the nett winner in rounds two and three, said that her chipping and putting have both improved of late, which helped her keep her scores down across the four rounds and win the 2021 ladies club championship.
