The Independent Planning Commission will reconvene today for a second day of hearings in relation to the proposed extension of Whitehaven Coal’s Narrabri underground mine.

Commissioners heard evidence from government department officials, residents, academics, businesses and other interested parties during a video conference held on Monday.

Among the speakers at Monday’s online hearing were Whitehaven Coal managing director and chief executive officer Paul Flynn, the North West Protection Advocacy, Lock the Gate Alliance, the Australia Institute, Friends of the Pilliga and local farmers and residents.

The second day of online presentations, being held today, will also see a packed schedule of speakers.

Whitehaven Coal is expected to provide further evidence on the second day of hearings in addition to many representatives from the North West communities, including local and industrial businesses as well as further submissions by residents, academics and advocacy groups.

Professor Mary O’Kane AC, chair of the commission, is overseeing the proceedings. She is part of the three-member panel which will determine the outcome of the proposed development. Professor Snow Barlow and Professor Chris Fell AO are also part of the panel.

Written submissions in relation to the proposed development have been extended until February 25.
