Today (Tuesday, March 1) is Shrove Tuesday. Pancake Tuesday, also called Pancake Day, Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras (which is French for ‘Fat Tuesday’), is the last day of feasting before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. It is observed in many Christian countries and absolution, the ritual burning of the previous year’s Holy Week palms, finalising one’s Lenten sacrifice, as well as eating pancakes and other sweets.
