The heaviness of recent news headlines has many searching for ways to help.

From rallying to send supplies to flood victims or showing support for those suffering in Ukraine – the Aussie spirit traditionally compels us to offer a hand or somehow show we care.

When Narrabri resident Lisa Almagro was watching the horrific TV reports about Russia invading Ukraine, seeing husbands saying goodbye to wives and children before joining the fight, she was inspired to paint her letterbox the colours of Ukraine’s flag.

“I painted the letterbox a couple of years ago when I had a bee in my bonnet about the marriage equality vote and it was looking a bit faded, and on a recent Saturday morning in my pyjamas when I watched it unfold on the news I felt completely devastated, heartbroken and helpless,” said Mrs Almagro.

“So yes, in my nightie, all of a sudden, I’m in the front yard painting my mailbox the colours of the Ukrainian flag.”

Mrs Almagro said the ‘never give up’ attitude being shown by so many Ukrainians was beyond admirable.

“They are great, they are so passionate and patriotic, and I imagine that Australians share that – the camaraderie, the mateship.

“It’s just absolutely devastating, imagine having to kiss your husband goodbye or vice versa.

“I think we’re incredibly lucky to live here.”
