Police are appealing to Narrabri, Wee Waa and Boggabri communities to ensure homes and vehicles are adequately secured.
The plea comes following steal from motor vehicles and vehicle thefts which have occurred across the towns in recent months.
In some instances, opportune thieves have gained access to unlocked vehicles or have been able to gain entry to vehicles by entering unlocked homes.
Police have zero tolerance for theft, or attempted theft, of any nature.
Some tips in relation to vehicle and home security:
- Always take personal belongings with you when you leave your vehicle.
- Always lock doors, close windows and your sunroof every time you leave your car.
- Even if you leave your car for a minute or two, never leave your keys in the ignition. Your car can be stolen in an instant.
- Park in well-lit areas at night. Where possible, park in a locked garage or secure carport.
- Keeping your keys safe and secure will also help to prevent vehicle theft.
- Never hide spare keys in your vehicle, even if they are not visible. Thieves know where to look.
- Never leave your keys on your desk at work or in easily accessible places like in your bag or on a table.
- Do not leave your keys in an obvious place at home.
- Do not leave any important documents including identification cards and papers in your vehicle.
- Insure your vehicle against theft. Make sure your policy is up-to-date and reflects your current residential address.
- Remember many vehicle insurance policies will be void if you don’t take adequate precautions to protect your vehicle.
- At home, ensure all windows and doors are secure.
- Lock your gates, sheds and garages.
- Fit quality security doors, windows, locks, alarms and lighting.
- When away from home, have a family, friend or trusted neighbour regularly check on your home.
- Use a timer to activate an internal light or radio to give the impression someone is home,.
