Construction has started on Narrabri Shire Council’s state-of-the-art companion animal facility.
The new facility is set to be bigger and better than the existing enclosure.
Council’s director planning and strategy Donna Ausling said the structure will be located at the Narrabri Waste Facility Complex and would have a range of features to ensure the comfort and security of both staff and animals.
“The facility has been designed with animal welfare considerations in mind and will comply with RSPCA design guidelines,” Ms Ausling
said.
The development will replace the current outdated facility located near the Narrabri saleyards.
“The new building is climate-controlled and fully insulated with 12 kennels including two dangerous dog kennels, vet room, cat cages, food preparation area and an office with amenities.
“There will also be two secure dog runs and a drive-through area for safety and security.”
Ms Ausling said the new site is much larger than the existing facility, allowing for potential expansion in the future.
“The total site area for the new facility is 3584m2 and the building footprint is 209m2.
“The existing site is 400m2 and the building footprint is 112m2.”
The new building will allow temporary housing of both dogs and cats and contains supporting facilities, including a vet room.
Local contractors and tradespeople have been appointed to conduct construction works.
Construction of the facility is expected by early 2023.
