The state funeral for Queen Elizabeth will be held in London on Monday, September 19.
The funeral will mark a sad milestone in our history and will be attended by mourners from around the world.
The invitation list for the funeral includes Maules Creek’s Shanna Whan.
Shanna is founder of Sober in the Country, a not-for-profit body that raises awareness of the dangers of alcohol misuse and aims to change attitudes toward alcohol in regional Australia.
Shanna was named 2022 Australian Local Hero of the Year and is one of the ten Australians invited to Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.
Shanna will accompany Dylan Alcott AO – 2022 Australian of the Year, Valmai Dempsey – 2022 Senior Australian of the Year, Dr Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr Baumann AM, 2021 Senior Australian of the Year, Saba Abraham – Local Hero 2022, Queensland, Kim Smith APM – Local Hero 2022, Tasmania, Trudy Lin – Young Australian of the year 2022, South Australia, Danny Abdallah – Co-Creator of i4give Day and Foundation, Chris Waller – Inductee, Australian Racing Hall of Fame and Professor Helen Milroy – Western Australia, Australian of the Year 2021.
The 10 invitees will join Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his partner Jodie Haydon, Governor-General David Hurley and his wife Linda Hurley, and the acting High Commissioner Lynette Wood and partner.
Shanna and her fellow Australian of the Year award recipients met and spoke with the Queen for her jubilee celebrations earlier this year via Zoom at Government House, something Mrs Whan said she will ‘forever treasure.’
