Local golfers Troy Nott and Louise Penberthy are Narrabri Golf Club’s 2022 club champions following the fourth and final round of the club championships on Sunday.
The 2022 club championships were contested across four rounds and two weekends.
The first two rounds were scheduled to be played on Saturday and Sunday, September 3 and 4, but were pushed back a week as the course was too wet to play on following an abundance of rain.
That meant rounds three and four, which were scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, September 10 and 11, were also pushed back a week.
Despite winning this year’s event by eight shots, Nott was remarkably never a gross winner in any of the four rounds this year.
However, the 41-year-old played consistently and won comfortably to claim his second club championships crown after he won the event back in 2017.
Nott, who plays off scratch, shot a two-over-par score of 73 on day one and then a three-over-par 74 the next day to sit second on the leaderboard at the completion of 36 holes.
Leading by one shot was the defending club champion Adam Taylor who was searching for a third consecutive crown in 2022.
Nott then took a commanding lead in round three on Saturday when he shot a one-over-par 72 as Taylor shot an 80.
Like Taylor, David Avery went into the fourth and final round on 226 shots, seven behind Nott. Avery had scored 77 in round one, 72 in round two and 77 in round three.
Sitting in fourth after three rounds was Josh Orman, who was one shot back from Taylor and Avery.
The four top-ranked golfers played alongside each other during Sunday’s fourth and final round, and it was Nott who got the job done.
He shot a four-over-par 75 to finish the event with an overall score of 294. Avery shot a 77 to place second with 302, and then coming from absolutely nowhere to place third was one of the town’s newer golfers Karl Hatfield.
Hatfield was eighth following the first two rounds with a 36-hole score of 161 after shooting a 79 on day one and then an 82 on day two. However, he played superb golf in rounds three and four as he shot a 70 on Saturday and then a 72 on Sunday to end the event just one shot behind Avery on 303.
Taylor placed fourth with a score of 305, two shots ahead of fifth-placed Orman (307).
Other A-grade golfers to play all four rounds included Peter Butler (311), Mark Campbell (315), Shane Hartog-Smith (316), Cameron Lennox (327), Keith Flood (328), and Adam Hatton (344).
For Penberthy, the 2022 ladies’ club championship victory saw her defend the crown after she claimed the 2021 event earlier this year.
However, she bettered her previous score of 391 by an impressive nine shots as she finished the four rounds on 382.
Penberthy was the gross winner in each of the first three rounds as she shot 94, 93 and 94, respectively. A 101 on Sunday was certainly an outlier for the two-time champion, but she still managed to win the event by 16 shots from the second-placed Ingrid Moulds (398).
Lyn Shearer and Jane Lennox were tied for third on 400, and then placing fifth to ninth were Robin Ford (404), Joy Baker (410), Karen Fenton (417), Peggy Penberthy (419), and Yvonne Findley (424).
Meanwhile, Troy Nott’s father Tony won the B-grade men’s division after shooting 343 across the four rounds to outscore the gross runner-up Dean Hamblin (351) by eight shots.
The B-grade ladies’ division was won by Robyn Smith, who was the gross winner with a four-round score of 392, while Myra Joseph was the runner-up with 406.
In the C-grade men’s division, Rhys Orman was the gross winner with 383 from Tim Simmonds (second) and Robin Findley (third), who both scored 390.
Nett winners in each division were Peter Butler (A-grade men), Jane Lennox (A-grade ladies), Robert Wallis (B-grade men), Karleigh Cook (B-grade ladies) and Jake Thurston (C-grade men).
